How Electronic Bowie Dick Tests Improve Steam Sterilization
A practical guide to reliable steam penetration testing and daily routine control of autoclaves
Why Steam Sterilization Requires Routine Testing
In many industries, you need products such as vials, containers, and lab equipment to be sterile before use. Sterility helps you protect against foreign particles and contaminants that could compromise product quality or invalidate laboratory results.
To achieve this, you steam sterilize equipment in autoclaves. Because contaminants can compromise your products or lab tests, you need to test these autoclaves frequently to ensure that they operate and sterilize as intended.
One of the most widely used methods for verifying sterilizer performance is the Bowie Dick test autoclave procedure, also known as a steam penetration test or autoclave air removal test.
Step 1: Verify Air Removal & Steam Penetration
When you perform a Bowie Dick test, you verify that your sterilizer can effectively remove air and allow saturated steam to penetrate the sterilization load.
The test was originally developed by Dr. J. Bowie and J. Dick in 1963 to test air removal efficiency in steam sterilizers. Their method used folded towels containing chemical indicator tape. If steam penetrated the towels and caused the indicator to react, the test result was considered a pass.
This is a critical procedure, as non-condensable gases (NCGs), like air, nitrogen, and CO2, don’t liquefy during sterilization. This results in air pockets that act as insulators that block steam condensation. So to prevent sterilization failures, the objective of a steam penetration test is to confirm that excess air and NCGs are removed so that saturated steam reaches and properly sterilizes all parts of the load.
Step 2: Understand the Limitations of Chemical Bowie Dick Tests
Traditional Bowie Dick tests rely on chemical indicators that change color when exposed to steam.
These indicators consist of layers of paper and a test sheet that reacts when saturated steam reaches it. You then interpret the result visually as either pass or fail.
However, this method introduces uncertainty. Slight color changes can be difficult to interpret, and several studies have shown that chemical indicators can produce false positives or fade in color over time – risking historic documentation.
These limitations can make it harder for you to verify sterilizer performance with full confidence.
Step 3: Improve Accuracy with Electronic Bowie Dick Tests
With modern electronic Bowie Dick tests, you can verify sterilizer performance using a more objective method.
Instead of relying on visual interpretation, these devices measure critical physical parameters of the sterilization process. This allows you to perform reliable daily routine control of autoclaves while eliminating guesswork.
Electronic Bowie Dick tests are widely used for both routine testing and batch control of sterilizers.
In addition to verifying sterilizer performance, you can also use these tests to optimize your sterilization processes by gaining access to objective process data.
Step 4: Support Batch Control & Parametric Release
While the Bowie Dick test verifies sterilizer functionality, you use batch control to confirm that individual loads are sterilized according to the required Safety Assurance Level (SAL).
Traditionally, this verification has relied on biological indicators that you must incubate after sterilization to determine the survival rate of microbiological spores.
Electronic test devices provide a faster alternative by allowing you to measure critical process parameters directly during sterilization. This enables you to release loads based on verified process data through parametric release.
- Compared with traditional methods, electronic testing provides several advantages:
- Clear pass/fail results without subjective interpretation.
- Immediate results, allowing you to release batches faster.
- Easy storage, retrieval, and comparison of data in a database.
- Reduced waste compared with disposable indicators.
Electronic Bowie Dick Testing: The Ellab Way
At Ellab, we have developed the SteriSense® system to support reliable electronic Bowie-Dick test procedures and batch control of autoclaves.
The compact device helps you reveal sterilizer performance issues that may go unnoticed with less precise methods.
Key advantages include:
- Economically efficient testing for high test volumes.
- Objective results that eliminate the risk of false or unclear readings.
- Time stamps included to increase reliability.
- Additional process insight with checks performed according to ISO 17665.
- Easy storage, retrieval, and comparison of data from a database.
The system also features an interchangeable Process Challenge Device (PCD), allowing you to quickly replace the test unit between cycles instead of waiting for equipment to cool.
