Ellab’s Sustainability Targets Are Now Approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative

Ellab is proud to announce that our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Our approval from the Science Based Targets initiative signifies that Ellab’s corporate targets for reducing GHG emissions are fully aligned with the SBTi Criteria and Recommendations (version 5.0). Notably, our Scope 1 and 2 targets adhere to the ambitious 1.5°C trajectory recommended by the IPCC special report.

This achievement highlights our unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and positions us as a leader in the pursuit of a low-carbon future.

The recent IPCC special report emphasized the urgent need to limit global warming to 1.5°C and achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century. As we embark on this crucial decarbonization journey, science-based targets (SBTs) serve as a vital tool, ensuring that organizations like ours maximize transparency and accountability every step of the way.

What Is the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaborative effort between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). By mobilizing companies and promoting science-based target setting, the SBTi drives the transition to a low-carbon economy, supports the development and implementation of best practices, offers guidance to overcome barriers, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. It focuses on:

  • Building technical foundations.
  • Scaling up adoption.
  • Conducting independent assessments.
  • Institutionalizing SBTs.

Scope 1 & 2

Scope 1 & 2 represents direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources owned by Ellab, and indirect GHG emissions from consumption of purchased electricity, heat, or steam. A recent GHG inventory comparison between our base year (2020) and 2021 was also disclosed and reviewed as part of the target validation, with evidence of having been reduced by an outstanding 69%.

The Science Based Targets initiative assesses submitted targets against three temperature pathways: 2°C, well-below 2°C, and 1.5°C alignment. The most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process is a 1.5°C trajectory, which we are proud to be aligned towards as part of Ellab’s industry leading Scope 1 & 2 sustainable practices. This reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible environmental practices.

Scope 3

Scope 3 defines emissions related to production and transport of purchased products and employee commuting.

At Ellab, we recognize the importance of addressing not only our scope 1 and 2 emissions but also our scope 3 emissions, which account for a significant portion of our total. Our commitment to reducing emissions throughout our value chain reflects our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship, and our Scope 3 targets are in line with the goal of well below 2 Degrees.

Our Commitment

Ellab is firmly committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by an impressive 79.6% by 2030, using the year 2020 as our base. Additionally, we have set a target to achieve a 25% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, and employee commuting within the same timeframe. These ambitious targets have undergone rigorous review by the Science Based Targets initiative and have been found to meet all the necessary criteria in terms of timeframe, emissions coverage, and ambition.

With SBTi approval, Ellab takes significant strides towards a low-carbon future. We remain dedicated to implementing sustainable practices, minimizing our environmental impact, and contributing to a healthier planet. Through continued innovation and collaboration, we aim to inspire positive change within our industry and beyond.

As we move forward, Ellab is committed to regularly disclosing our GHG emissions and progressing towards our targets, ensuring maximum transparency and accountability. By adhering to science-based targets and integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations, we strive to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
